EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
